MALAYSIA: Malaysian police have arrested an 80-year-old woman in connection with a hit-and-run collision in Ipoh that killed a police officer who was on his way to work.
Ipoh district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the suspect, a retired woman who had been driving a Perodua Myvi, was detained later on the same day (21 January) at the Ipoh District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division.
She was unhurt at the time of arrest and tested negative in a urine screening.
Driver allegedly made illegal turn before fleeing scene
The collision occurred at about 3.30 pm on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.
Preliminary findings indicate the suspect’s car had entered the junction from Jalan Lengkok Harimau and attempted a right turn at a prohibited area into oncoming traffic.
The manoeuvre led to a collision with a Yamaha Y16ZR motorcycle ridden by Corporal Mohd Hafizan Othman, 33, who was travelling straight along the correct lane, police said.
Victim pronounced dead at scene
Corporal Mohd Hafizan, attached to the Kampung Rapat police station, was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining severe head injuries.
Police said he had been heading to report for a duty shift scheduled to begin at 4 pm.
Investigators said the driver fled immediately after the crash, leaving the vehicle abandoned near the scene.
The car was later traced to the suspect, leading to her arrest.
Case investigated under dangerous driving law
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Both vehicles involved have been seized and sent for inspection at Malaysia’s vehicle inspection authority, PUSPAKOM.
Police added that the officer is survived by his wife and three-year-old daughter.
