SINGAPORE: A 28-year-old man was suspected to have drowned in waters off East Coast Park on 21 December 2025, with his body recovered close to seven hours after authorities were first alerted to the incident.
The police said they received a report of a suspected drowning at about 11.55am.
Officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving the alert, according to information provided to local media.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for water rescue assistance at around noon.
Firefighters were deployed to the location soon after the request for assistance was made.
Upon arrival, SCDF firefighters conducted a visual search from the shoreline.
This initial effort was aimed at locating the individual in the area where he was last seen, SCDF said in a statement.
Divers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) were also activated to assist in the operation.
According to SCDF, the divers carried out underwater searches in the vicinity where the man was believed to have entered the water.
In addition to the shore and underwater searches, SCDF said its marine firefighters were deployed on board a marine rescue vessel. The vessel patrolled nearby waters as part of the coordinated rescue and search efforts.
Despite several hours of searching, the man was not immediately located. SCDF later retrieved a body from the shoreline at about 6.40pm on the same day.
The police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.
No further details were released about the man’s identity at the time.
Members of the public reported a visible emergency response at East Coast Park earlier in the day. In a post on social media platform Xiaohongshu on 21 December 2025, a user said police and SCDF vehicles were seen in the area around noon.
According to the post, officers had cordoned off a large section of the park.
Divers and a boat were also observed conducting operations in the waters nearby.
A video accompanying the post showed at least two police cars, an ambulance, and an SCDF vehicle parked within the vicinity. Several police officers were seen at a pavilion inside the cordoned area, standing with a group of people.
The police said preliminary investigations do not suggest foul play. They added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
