THAILAND: A woman armed with a knife was arrested in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area after attempting to attack members of the public, including foreign tourists, according to Thai media reports.
The incident occurred around Sukhumvit Road and nearby Soi 3 in the Nana district, a busy area popular with visitors.
Footage shared online showed the woman walking along the street while brandishing the weapon, lunging at passers-by and causing pedestrians to flee.
Witnesses reported that she targeted several people before entering a taxi in an apparent attempt to escape.
Bystanders and Police Intervene
After the woman entered the taxi, taxi drivers, motorbike taxi riders and bystanders surrounded the vehicle to prevent it from leaving.
Videos showed police arriving shortly after, with one officer entering the taxi from the opposite side as others assisted from outside.
The woman continued to act aggressively inside the vehicle, repeatedly attempting to stab at those nearby.
She was eventually subdued and disarmed through coordinated efforts by police and members of the public, including a Grab driver.
Injuries Reported, Including a Child
Thai news outlets reported that two foreign nationals were injured in the incident, including a child.
Social media users and witnesses alleged that the woman had stabbed a boy earlier in the evening, although official details on the victims’ conditions have not been fully disclosed.
Links to Earlier Bus Incident
Separately, Thai media and social media users linked the woman to a previous knife-related incident on a public bus.
Videos posted by Facebook user Nisarat Gam Dumnernsawat showed a woman threatening passengers with a knife during an argument with a bus attendant.
In that incident, the bus attendant and driver restrained the woman and removed her from the bus.
According to the bus attendant cited by the Bangkok Post, the woman had displayed similar behaviour on previous occasions.
Mental Health Concerns Raised
Local media reported that the woman has mental health issues.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether she is the same individual involved in the earlier bus incident, but police are understood to be investigating the matter.
