A pedestrian overpass collapsed on the inbound lane of Bang Na-Trat Road on the morning of 18 December, 2025, after being struck by a raised dump truck. The accident resulted in the death of a pickup truck driver and serious disruption to traffic in the area.

According to a report by the Bangkok Post, citing FM91 Trafficpro, the incident occurred at 9.15am at kilometre marker 34 in tambon Bang Phli Noi of Bang Bo district, Samut Prakan.

An 18-wheeler dump truck had its carrier raised when it struck the pedestrian bridge, causing a 16-metre section to collapse. Part of the concrete structure fell onto the dump truck and the adjacent pickup truck, which was transporting eggs.

Rescue teams from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation were dispatched immediately. They found the 59-year-old pickup driver deceased at the scene.

The dump truck driver, aged 65, suffered minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Authorities confirmed the dump truck driver was taken into custody for questioning and would face charges related to the fatal incident.

Two cranes were deployed to lift the collapsed structure and clear the road. The operation took approximately three hours, after which traffic resumed to normal levels.

Piyapong Jiwattanakulpaisarn, Director of the Highways Department, provided technical context, stating the bridge was designed to handle vertical loads. However, the impact from the raised dump truck introduced lateral forces beyond the structure’s design limits.

He noted that the overpass originally cost around 10 million baht to build. Civil engineers are now conducting a detailed assessment to determine whether the bridge must be entirely demolished and rebuilt.

The collapse raises broader questions about vehicle compliance with road safety regulations, particularly regarding raised carriers on large trucks. It also highlights the need for clearer signage or mechanisms to prevent overheight vehicles from entering zones with low-clearance structures.
