Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday, 4 December 2025, that five Indonesians remain missing after a major fire struck the Wang Fuk Court estate in Tai Po, Hong Kong, last week.
The ministry confirmed that 125 Indonesian citizens have been located and declared safe.
According to a written statement quoted by Antara, around 140 Indonesians were residing in the complex as of 3 December 2025. The ministry added that all residents were employed as domestic workers.
The number of deceased Indonesians remains at nine. Another Indonesian citizen is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital, according to the ministry’s update.
The fire at the Wang Fuk Court complex resulted in at least 159 deaths across the building.
Hong Kong authorities also reported 79 injuries and confirmed that 31 people remain missing following the incident.
Hong Kong police have detained 21 individuals linked to the main contractor, scaffolding subcontractors, fire alarm firms and technical consultancy services.
Authorities stated that these detentions are part of investigations into potential negligence surrounding the fire.
Investigators indicated that bamboo scaffolding and plastic window coverings may have contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze.
These materials reportedly enabled flames to engulf multiple floors within minutes.
Last Sunday, the spokesperson for Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yvonne Mewengkang, said the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong had established a family coordination team.
She said the team will oversee communication and assist with the repatriation of the victims’ bodies.
Yvonne noted that some Indonesian victims have been successfully identified.
However, she added that DNA testing may be required to confirm the identities of others.
She stated that no timeframe can yet be given for repatriation.
The identification process and coordination with Hong Kong authorities are still ongoing.
