JAPAN: A 26-year-old woman in Osaka fell from the balcony of her apartment during a rescue attempt after panicking and refusing help from firefighters.
The incident occurred on 14 November at around 7am in Higashiyodogawa Ward.
Japanese police said the woman is believed to have accidentally started the fire while cooking eggs.
The blaze broke out in a single room on the second floor of a four-storey reinforced concrete apartment building, burning an estimated 12 square metres.
A total of 22 fire trucks were dispatched to the scene.
Terrifying Rescue Attempt Captured on Video
A now-viral video shows the woman sitting on the edge of her balcony in her pyjamas as small explosions sounded behind her.
Firefighters pleaded with her to move closer to them, but she appeared too frightened to follow instructions.
As additional firefighters set up a second ladder, she attempted to climb down on her own.
She slipped, became caught between the ladder steps, and struggled to turn her body around.
In her panic, she kicked the ladder—sending one firefighter tumbling to the ground.
She continued kicking as firefighters tried to reposition it.
Moments later, she lost her balance and fell face-first despite a rescuer’s attempt to grab her sleeve.
Paramedics immediately attended to her, and she reportedly sustained minor injuries to her legs and chin.
Witnesses Call Her Reaction Understandable
While some online commenters criticised her behaviour, the individual who filmed the incident—who works in a nearby building—expressed sympathy.
The poster said her reaction was “completely natural” for someone in extreme panic, adding that she appeared unable to register what firefighters were telling her.
“I thought that when people get into a panic, they really can’t hear the voices around them anymore,” the witness wrote.
Some reports claimed the woman was a Chinese national, according to Sin Chew Daily, though Japanese police have urged the public not to speculate and to wait for the conclusions of their investigation.
